Gartner's Country Meats (Turkeys)
This old school meat market is pretty much a protein Mecca. Find an excuse to get your behind out here for the cheap, fresh housemade pepperoni sticks even if you're not ordering a turkey. The market was closed by the time I called them today, but I can vouch that they've usually got competitive prices on both fresh and house-smoked birds. I'll update with numbers when possible. Gartner's, 7450 NE Killingsworth St., 252-7801.
Nicky USA (Turkeys & More!)
When a turkey just won't do, local wild game purveyor Nicky USA has all your weird fowl needs taken care of. Oooh, squab ($10.99 per pound)!
Pastaworks (Turkeys)
Get thee to Pastaworks for "broad-breasted white" Northwest Natural turkeys ($3.20 a pound). They're sold out of the 10-12 pounders but they've got a ton of smaller and bigger (we're talking 20-22 pounders) for sale. Call 232-1010 to order asap.
Nuvrei Desserts
Baker Marius Pop's pastry goods are already an under-the-radar addiction in this town. Spread the habit to your loved ones with two special order-only Thanksgiving desserts on offer from Nuvrei this year: Hazelnut Pumpkin Cake, a layered whopper of pumpkin crème brulee, chocolate sachertorte, hazelnut and chocolate mousse ($38-$60) and a pumpkin vanilla custard "Autumn" tart with pears ($26-$39). They'll be worth every penny. Nuvrei's taking orders through Nov. 26, but Pop says "sooner is better." Nuvrei Fine Cakes & Pastries, 404 NW 10th Ave., 546-3032. Pix Desserts

The traditional pumpkin pie gets a cheesecake makeover with a spiced pecan crust ($24-$32) while the pecan pie goes glam with the addition of Spanish almonds, cashews, hazelnuts and bittersweet chocolate chips (The Nutcracker, $28-$34). Most intriguing? The Macaroon Cornucopia: "Four dozen colorful French macaroons in assorted flavors overflow an edible cornucopia of caramelized almonds." And that'd be an $85 wow.
