David Edwards Decides Against House Run

With the Oregon House evenly split 30-30, it's appropriate that one of next year's most closely-watched races will be House District 30, which covers parts of Hillsboro.

When former State Rep. David Edwards (D-Hillsboro) decided not to seek re-election in 2010, that announcement cost Democrats a rising star and surrendered the seat to a promising young lawyer, Rep. Shawn Lindsay (R-Hillsboro).

Edwards stepped down because of his wife's health problems and to shoot a horror film. But recently he's been seriously considering another run in the district, which at last count, contained 2,546 more Democrats than Republicans.

But in a blow to Democrats' hopes of regaining a majority, Edwards told WW today he will remain on the political sidelines.

"I've decided against running for the state legislature in 2012," Edwards, 45, said in an email. "My wife's uncertain health, combined with a continued desire to spend more time with my two teenage sons, precludes running for any public office at this time. I've met with a couple of potential Democratic candidates who I think can mount winning campaigns for the seat. I'm not comfortable, however, releasing their names."

Edwards, who is an adviser to the Oregon Cultural Trust and a board member of Stand For Children and the Cultural Advocacy Coalition, says he hopes to finish post-production of his movie, "Nightscape," by the end of February.
