Mayoral Madness: Vera Katz Regional, Round 4

Mike Rice vs. Timothy Hutton

We've reached the Elite Eight—last stop before greatness. But this week, we want to change it up a little bit. We've been pitting these mayoral candidates against each other, but do we really know who they are? Before you vote, an introduction.

Mike Rice is the color commentator for the Portland Trail Blazers, though he has never sat through an entire basketball game. Most nights he just wanders the hallways of the Rose Garden, describing the sights he sees; sometimes these match up in a surrealistic way with the events in the game. In the third grade, he scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, then put a curse on Grant High School for discontinuing Chili Thursdays. He has a way with pigeons.

Timothy Hutton was born in Lake Forest, Illinois. His childhood was bucolic until the death of his brother in a boating accident. His mother (Mary Tyler Moore) grew distant toward him, and they often fought. His father (Donald Sutherland) tried to understand him, but he was rebellious and confrontational until a wise therapist (the always excellent Judd Hirsch) helped him make a breakthrough, and forgive his mom. She left. Then he won an Oscar.
