VHS Swap Meet

[FILM] I don't even have a VHS player, but this is an amazing idea: those who yearn for the days of box sets that literally came in a box and cleaning heads can finally gather in one place, on one day, to buy and sell grainy tapes long-forgotten video gold. Jealous. Floating World Comics, 400 NW Couch St. 3 pm. Free.

OMSI Science Pub: Antarctica in the Palm of Your Hand
[EDUTAINMENT] Not literally, of course. That would be crazy. For this month's Science Pub, Dr. Ted Scambos, the lead scientist at the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center, will take the audience on a tour of the ice sheet... in your mind! Bagdad Theater, 3702 Southeast Hawthorne Blvd. 7 pm. $5 suggested cover. 21+ or minor with adult.

Wednesday, July 18

Think and Drink: The Future of Human and Artificial Intelligence

[EDUTAINMENT] Can technology create better humans? Transhumanist Ramez Naam and science and technology historian Mott Greene will debate the prospect of a brave new world of neuroenhancing drugs and gene therapies at Oregon Humanities' latest Think and Drink. I did a Q&A with Naam last week (look out for it in this Wednesday's edition of WW!), and the dude will make you rethink everything you learned from Gattaca.  Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan St. 6:30 pm. Free.

Star Wars Trivia Night
[TRIVIA] Answer questions about star wars, you must. Yes, hmmm. The Eagles Lodge, 4904 SE Hawthorne Blvd. 8 pm. Free.

An Evening with Bill Plympton
[FILM] Portland-born animator and cartoonist Bill Plympton will show some recent shorts, and give away an original drawing. NW Film Center Whitsell Auditorium, 1219 SW Park Ave. 9 pm. $9. Tickets here.

Friday, July 20

Captain Marvel Release Party

[COMICS] Ms. Marvel is the new Captain Marvel, and Portland writer Kelly Sue DeConnick will be signing comics of the new Captain Marvel #1. Bridge City Comics, 3725 N Mississippi Ave. 6 pm. Free.

GoPlay PDX
[GAMING] An evening of story gaming and indie RPGs, including Fiasco and the Apocalypse World hack World of Dungeons, plus anything else you want to bring. Rainy Day Games, 18105 SW Tualatin Valley Hwy. 6 pm. Free.

Saturday, July 21

Amanda Palmer

[MUSIC] Internet sweetheart Amanda Palmer (probably best known for the Dresden Dolls and being married to Neil Gaiman) is in town, and she'll be performing with locals Alameda and the Doubleclicks at a benefit for Literacy Bridge, helping farmers and women in Saabaalong, Ghana. PDX Q Center, 4115 N Mississippi St. 7 pm. $30. Tickets here.

The listings here are written by WW, but we crib events shamelessly from the Geek Portland calendar. Go there for more events and information.

WWeek 2015

Willamette Week’s reporting has concrete impacts that change laws, force action from civic leaders, and drive compromised politicians from public office.
