Einstein Bros. Bagels Closing Three Portland Locations

Denver chain also discontinuing Kettleman-style boiled bagels.

Three of Einstein Bros. Bagels' Portland locations, on Southeast 11th Avenue, Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and Southwest Scholls Ferry Road, were permanently closed on Friday, April 12, representatives from the Colorado-based Einstein Noah Group have confirmed. Eleven other Portland-area locations will remain open.

Kettleman Bagels
reported
shocked and dismayed

Despite initial assurances to employees that "nothing would change" at the five Portland Kettleman locations, much did. Employees were disallowed from receiving tips, and the shops were rebranded in 2012 as Einstein Bros.

The chain did maintain three of Kettleman's boiled-bagel recipes for a time. But as of this weekend, says an employee at the Einstein Bros. location on Northwest 23rd and Lovejoy, the "kettle-style" boiled bagels have been discontinued.

The location closing at 2225 SE 11th Ave. was the original Portland Kettleman location. The addresses of the other two closed Einstein Bros. locations are at 4704 SW Scholls Ferry Rd. and 3541 SE Hawthorne Blvd.

The official statement from the Einstein Noah Group below:
"In alignment with our original plan for the Portland market, we have made the decision to close our Hawthorne, Raleigh Hills and SE 11th Ave. locations in order to provide more evenly distributed locations within the community where guests can pick up their fresh baked bagels, coffee, sandwiches and more. With 11 locations in the market, we are very committed to the success of Einstein Bros. in the Portland market and encourage our guests to visit our other nearby locations."
