At a City Hall rally todayâput on with support of Oregon AFL-CIOâUnion Cab officials announced they will offer fareless rides Friday from 3 pm to 10 pm.
The company was formed in response to findings in a January 2012 city report that found many contracted taxi drivers work for low wages and no benefits.
Union Cab, said AFL-CIO President Tom Chamberlian, is âan example of a community workers who they knew deserved more and got it.â
The cooperative cab launched this spring with 50 cars, is a cooperative pushed in part by labor unions, which have tried to organize cab drivers in the city over the past decade.
