The journey to build an appropriate tribute to John Callahan rolled forward this month with the receipt of a $100,000 challenge grant toward the design and construction of a memorial honoring one of Portland's favorite and most provocative sons.
Last year, we announced the donation of land for a memorial to the quadraplegic cartoonist.
Now, thanks to an anonymous donor, every time someone makes a charitable $25 donation, another $25 is donated toward a $200,000 goal.
The property, a slice of land on NW 21st and Marshall, was kindly donated by Good Samaritan Hospital in the Northwest Portland neighborhood Callahan called home. Portland artist Tad Savinar and landscape architect Jesse Stemmler provided a design—complete with a wall of Callahan's work.
