Upright's Engelberg Pilsner won 2015's Beer of the Year.
The owner and Brewmaster Alex Ganum opened his brewery in the basement of the Leftbank building in 2009. Since then, Upright has made a name for itself brewing Belgian-style saisons as well as pushing outside the boundaries of what a standard Pacific Northwest beer tastes like.
Ganum stumbled into his basement brewing space when a friend of the landlord overheard him talking about how he was looking for a spot on the outskirts of town. But with such close quarters, the only way he could ever get the brewing equipment out is to scrap it.
