What to Do in Brooklyn

Things to eat, drink and do in Portland's Brooklyn neighborhood.

There's a world of difference between factory-distressed and genuinely rustic, frosted tips and orange sun-bleached, corn syrup and cane sugar. Will MAX stop in Brooklyn? Yes, of course, there will actually be a MAX stop. It's a metaphor, where nostalgic locals will find a sense of refuge in this nod toward old Portland, the city that doesn't need a punch in the face. EAT & DRINK:

Try a housemade, small-batch cider or a bottle from an extensive cider-only list at Bushwhacker Cider (1212 D SE Powell Blvd., 445-0577, bushwhackercider.com). It has a limited food menu but encourages patrons to bring in their own picnics. Stop at Edelweiss (3119 SE 12th Ave., 238-4411, edelweissdeli.com) across the street for German charcuterie, chewy country bread and honey cake to go.

SHOP:

It's possible to spend an entire afternoon perusing the antique décor and vintage trinkets at Brooklyn Mall (3384 SE Milwaukie Ave., 233-2550, brooklynmall.org), home to astute dealers such as Vintage Vixens and Chantiques. Precision-made custom jewelry, hand-blown glass housewares and unique wedding sets fill Elemental Arts (1133 SE Pershing St., 238-3862, elementalarts.us), a glittering Portland institution since 2003.

THINGS TO DO:

Join the whiskey club at Brooklyn Park Pub (3400 SE Milwaukie Ave., 234-7772) and it will keep track of what you've sampled from its incredible list—you just do the drinking. Learn to brew your own kombucha at Lion Heart Kombucha (3434 SE Milwaukie Ave., 956-8716, lionheartkombucha.com) and take home a starter kit or some bottled blueberry ginger or lavender bliss to sip while waiting for your finished product.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT:

Check out some music, a film festival or a comedy show at the Aladdin Theater (3017 SE Milwaukie Ave., 234-9694, aladdin-theater.com). Covet the pristinely restored and impeccably waxed vintage cars at Matthews Memory Lane Motors (2608 SE Holgate Blvd., 231-1940, memorylaneclassiccars.com).
