Shut Up and Eat

3848 SE Gladstone St., 719-6449, shutupandeatpdx.com. Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

Shut Up and Eat is like a warm blankie for the citified East Coaster—an all-purpose home to mortadella, meatball and cheesesteak that has expanded in the past couple years to not only a miniscule market and flat-screened sports bar in the back, but also a singular brunch spot. Each meal begins with a mini-bloody mary, of course, for a mere $5. The housemade English muffin is a thing of wonder, a crumpetlike round that's spongy inside and fried to a crisp that strikes the ideal balance of yolk-soaked bread and buttery crunch. While that's the crown on this sub shop's all-day breakfast menu, it's in good company with the grilled portobello that's a bacon alternative on any 'wich. Choose basic—egg, bacon, cheese—or cement your food coma with chicken-fried steak and blue cheese, washed down with Irish coffee.

Willamette Week’s reporting has concrete impacts that change laws, force action from civic leaders, and drive compromised politicians from public office.
