A Portland Suburb Will Have A Pop-up Outdoor Ice Skating Rink Starting This Month

Hillsboro's pop-up is the only outdoor skating rink in the Portland area.

For a city that's really into holiday shit, Portland is infamously deprived of ice skating options. The only rink in the city limits is inside the Lloyd Center, which reopened last year after renovations.

But this year, we'll have a full season of the Lloyd Center's fancy new rink updated with fake snow, plus an outdoor rink in Hillsboro.

The temporary rink will open at Hillsboro's Orenco Station Plaza at the end of this month. Now in its third year, it's the only outdoor ice skating rink in the Portland area, and the only spot where you can enjoy outdoor skating, which is a pleasure all its own.

Slightly smaller than the Lloyd Center, the Hillsboro rink uses real ice, so it's kept a festive 10 to 15 degrees colder than typical Portland winter weather. It's cheaper than Lloyd Center—$12 for rental skates and an hour and a half on the ice compared to Lloyd Center's $15. They even have plastic orange "skating aids" shaped like seals to help you balance.

The rink will open November 24 to January 1 from 10 am to 9:30 pm daily.
