Ginger Snaps (2000)
Even as horror is clearly 2026’s healthiest movie genre (for creators and for theaters), a certain subset has slipped into the sands of time.
Whatever happened to the teen-centric horror movie that punches above its weight, dramatically and thematically? In other words, whatever happened to Ginger Snaps?
The Canadian werewolf cult classic was by no means a hit in its time, grossing just $450,000 (though director John Fawcett did go on to co-create the Emmy-winning Orphan Black).
But in retrospect, it marked the denouement of a defiant, darkly comedic “the kids aren’t alright” strain of horror movie, whose tone traces through The Craft, Scream, and all the way back to Heathers.
Ginger Snaps centers on two teenage sisters—Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins)—who relish being social outcasts. That’s partly because of their macabre obsessions (suicide pacts and death-faking stunts) and partly because their belated first menstruation keeps them proudly separate from the ugly clichés of high school sex and dating.
Then comes the werewolf attack. And all of that alienation becomes a canvas for transformation and sexual paranoia and what happens to a blood bond when one sister can’t hold on to girlhood against the backdrop of a hateful world.
Trigger warning for rampant dog murder, shockingly good tail-growing effects, and the wild highs and lows of sibling connection. Moreland, Oct. 30.
