Westmoreland Park Casting Pond

7700 SE 22nd Ave., 503-823-2525.

Since it first opened as a municipal airfield in 1927, city planners have transformed this part of town into Westmoreland Park—complete with a hand-excavated fly-casting pond. Now, prospective anglers are allowed to practice their stroke only in fishless waters, but the pond still hosts Flyfishers' Club of Oregon events and has become the training grounds of recent Portland transplant Maxine McCormick, the two-time global champ whom The New York Times recently dubbed "the Mozart of casting."
