GO: Tom Kundig: Complete Houses
Tom Kundig is a visionary Seattle architect known for building sometimes moveable (actually!) houses into rocky sites. They’re all about juxtaposition, and they’re all site-specific efforts to blur lines of indoors with outdoors. Kundig comes to the Brunish Theatre in support of his newest book, Complete Houses, and will be joined onstage by Portland architecture journalist Brian Libby. Mature readers, hear me out—despite what you’ve heard, a lot of the kids are alright. In fact, some of them are exponentially funnier than their elders. GO: Bamfest: A Comedy Show Inspired by Maria Bamford
This all-star tribute show to the iconic diva Maria Bamford is officially endorsed by Ms. Bamford herself (confirmed) and spotlights a full slate of fabulous comics, all inspired by Bamford’s fearless take on the art form. Bonus, it’s also a celebration of Bamford’s birthday; expect Diet Coke and doughnuts. GO: Art in the Pearl
Now in its 30th year, Art in the Pearl is one of the top arts and crafts festivals in the nation (and also Portland’s annual end-of-summer soirée). If you’ve yet to experience it, this is your chance to soak up some Labor Day, waning-summer vibes and interact with more than a hundred craftspeople and artists working across all manner of mediums, including woodworkers, visual artists, glassblowers, ceramicists and metalsmiths from all over the U.S. Bonus: For interested parties, there will be hands-on activities and demos. GO: Portland Arab Mahrajan Festival
Put on by the Arab American Cultural Center of Oregon, Mahrajan is an annual end-of-summer celebration of Arabic heritage across the state, featuring a bazaar, music, dance, poetry, vendors, interactive crafts, children’s activities and henna artistry. Rather than sulking over the slow end of a smoky summer, spend Tuesday squeezed into the sultry basement of The Coffin Club to revel in Portland’s diverse burlesque scene at Burlynomicon’s 15th anniversary celebration.
