The 19th annual Oregon Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony is so stacked it’s almost unbelievable some of these names haven’t been enshrined, not least several stalwart indie-rock bands who’ve all but defined what Portland music looks like in the public eye. But some of the real treasures in this year’s lineup are the local legends—the blip-on-the-radar punk bands, city-limits heroes and behind-the-scenes movers and shakers that keep the local music community strong. Do you know your local rock-’n’-roll heroes?

1. England has Wetherspoons; the Pacific Northwest has this mini empire of historically minded drinkeries.

2. This punk-funk band’s short recording career included an album called Straight Outta Portland, released mere months after N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton in 1989.

3. One of the few stoner-metal bands ever to jam with Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer.

4. The only band we know that’s battled a giant whale puppet onstage.

5. This Portland indie-rock institution took its name from a Virginia Woolf line.

6. Fleetwood Mac and Basque folk music are major inspirations for this sparkly local indie-rock band.

7. This Portland music scene staple, who died in 2025, was known both for his six-decade music career and his longtime work behind the counter at Music Millennium.

8. Though he’s a “monster” of contemporary indie folk in his own right, this Portland singer-songwriter is also a Grammy-nominated producer.
