Former Multnomah County Chair Jeff Cogen suffered a "moderate" stroke on July 21 and is recovering in a rehabilitation facility, according to a statement put out by Impact NW, the nonprofit where Cogen serves as executive director.

The nonprofit says there "is no timetable on Jeff's return." Details about the severity of the stroke were sparse, but Impact NW says it is "optimistic" about the outlook of his recovery.

The Oregonian first reported on Cogen's health last week.

Cogen served as Multnomah County chair until his political career was derailed in 2013 by an affair with a subordinate who worked in the county's health department.

He took the helm at Impact NW last year, at a time when the largest social service provider in Portland was asking Multnomah County for an $850,000 bailout. It has continued to struggle.

Impact NW says that it is still operating smoothly without its executive director.

"We are stable here at Impact NW," said associate director Andy Nelson in a statement. "Employees are doubling down to make sure we keep services strong."
