The most interesting tidbit in Vanity Fair's postmortem profile of John Hughes this February was that he based Ferris Bueller's Day Off on his high-school memories…of himself. No, he wasn't nervous Cameron. He was Ferris. Which tells you something about his level of self-understanding, I suspect, and about the movie's plastic rosy view of adolescent freewheeling. But Hughes always saved himself from ridicule in the same way: He knew what was cool. (Charlie Sheen in a police station—that's cool.) Who can blame him for remembering himself the same way? Bagdad. 11 pm Friday, Sept. 3.
