Cheap Eats 2010

One of North Portland's myriad hole-in-the-wall taco joints, King Burrito earns its name. From its dingy palace on North Lombard Street, it reigns by virtue of vibrant flavors and dirt-cheap prices. The signature King Burrito ($4.25), stuffed with saucy steak picado and a pair of chiles rellenos, is a good entry to the menu. And the machaca—shredded beef fried with egg, cheese, onions and peppers ($4)—is a tasty alternative to tired breakfast burrito clichés. Be sure to dress up whatever you order with lime wedges, chile flakes and cilantro-and-onion relish at the condiment bar.
