It tends to confirm one's more churlish suspicions of the
world that Robert Downey Jr. had to don a British accent and a steampunk
gimmick to become a hit detective, when he all but perfected the art
four years prior in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Still, to cheer up, one need only watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang—it
must be the most joyful noir ever made. It's almost a screwball comedy
with guns, floating on the buzz of Shane Black's motormouth script and
the twinkle in Michelle Monaghan's eye. Even its self-awareness games,
usually a sign of bored superiority, feel like a fond hug to genre film. Laurelhurst.
