I know youâre probably too poor to fly out to Detroit for Movement. But it doesnât get any more Belleville-esque than RaÃz, an LA-based duo who make grinding digital techno, and Friday's Movement pre-party at Rotture is about $400 less than a ticket to DTW. (9 pm, $8 advance, $12 day of show, 21+)
Dimond Saints, a newborn collaboration between Oaklandâs An-Ten-Nae and ReLeece, have foregone their purple-hazed, belching textures for more traditionally synthesized sounds. No doubt the hyphy reappropriation movement will still be in full force at Refuge on Saturday. (9 pm, $15 advance, $25 day of show, 21+)
Caked Up take the pulse of the top 40 zeitgeist with a chokehold. Every hit that comes down the radio pipeline gets a thick trap or electro house slathering from the Jeffree's/Mad Decent affiliates: âWrecking Ball,â âFancy,â âApplauseâ and âDark Horse.â Individuals with smoke allergies are advised to avoid the Whiskey Bar on Friday. Of all the albums sprawling UK electronic label Hyperdub has released in its decade of existence, Ontarian R&B singer Jessy Lanzaâs has the weirdest and sexiest name. Pull My Hair Back dropped last September and stirred more than a few cups of tea on both sides of the pond, especially with â5785021.â Sheâs at Holocene on Monday. (8:30 pm, $12 advance, $14 day of show, 21+)
XXYYXX already has half a dozen critical darlings of albums and EPs under his childhoodâs belt, but itâs his increasing experimentation with ambient, garage and hip hopâall can be heard on SoundCloud singles âGoldenâ and âAngelââthat make him the most exciting 18-year-old on the planet. The teen gets angsty at Rotture on Wednesday. (9 pm, $15, 21+)
Cellist and experimentalist Arthur Russell is responsible for pushing disco further and further outside its comfort zone. His death over two decades ago was a huge loss for music, but his birthday is Wednesday, and Parenthetical Girlsâ Zac Pennington, Daniel Rafn, the Shaky Handsâ Nick Delffs, Massacooramaan and Kieran McKeon pay their respects Wednesday at Valentines. (9 pm, $3-5, 21+)
Live PA sets from Ethernet, Sun Hammer and Apartment Fox are what Accent//Sustain on Wednesday at Holocene is all about, with styles ranging from dub to techno to ambient. (9 pm, $5, 21+)
