Those Hellfire Missiles Were Headed for the Other Portland

Portland, Maine—not Portland, Oregon.

The oldest mix-up in the book—confusing Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine—just gained a new, high-stakes chapter.

The FBI says news reports that emerged Sunday from Serbia about two Hellfire missiles found in airline cargo traveling from Lebanon to Portland, Oregon were false.

In fact, the feds say, the missiles were marked for Portland, Maine.

"The items were not coming to Portland, Oregon. Those reports were not accurate," FBI spokeswoman Beth Anne Steele tells KGW-TV.

In the past hour, national news outlets have quickly updated their reports—many of them borrowing from a Serbian cable news broadcast—to say the Hellfire missiles were bound for Maine.
