President Donald Trump today formally nominated Portland hotelier Gordon Sondland to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the European Union.
Sondland runs Provenance Hotels, which manages ten hotels in in Portland including the Heathman, Sentinel, Lucia and deLuxe. He donated $1 million to the Trump inaugural committee after the president's victory in November 2016.
The nomination, first reported by Politico, fills a vacancy that had been open since January 2017.
