Drink 2008

Holding down a grim corner of North Lombard Street, this cavernous establishment is home to an irregular mix of regulars. Rumpled tipplers hunker in booths while apple-cheeked University of Portland students slurp $1.50 Jell-O shots. It's an arrangement of mutual tolerance made possible only with booze. Peruse the collective wisdom of generations of UP seniors who've scribbled their names and filthiest thoughts on the woodwork (with the bar's permission). But save the reading for weeknights; on Thursdays and Fridays, bands and DJs take over the Twilight's stage. On karaoke Saturdays and Wednesdays, sloshed sophomores live out their American Idol fantasies with more gusto than talent. Meanwhile, the Twilight's wizened professional drinkers take it all in through the bottom of a rocks glass.
Perfect Patron: Polo-shirted econ major trying to talk one of UP's good Catholic girls into going bad; jaded NASCAR dad sipping Canadian Club through a poker face. (ES)
