Drank: Pamplemousse Citrus IPA (Lompoc)

Lompoc Brewing is responsible for my favorite new Portland IPA of the year, a quickly disappeared one-off called White Album. That beer was a collaboration with Portland Brewing co-founder Fred Bowman and featured wheat and pale malts with Meridian and Chinook hops. White Album glowed in the glass, with a sweet citrus pop that balanced perfectly against a clean breadiness. Pamplemousse, the new bottled IPA from Lompoc, isn't the White Album, but it's no Yellow Submarine, either. Continuing the trend toward Radleresque IPAs, Pamplemousse gets a dose of fresh grapefruit juice that blends with rugged bitterness to resemble eating a halved grapefruit, without sugar. There's a little rind in the finish, and a little farmyness to the nose, but the lingering flavor is refreshing, fruity and pleasantly hoppy. Recommended.
