Bar Guide 2015: The Knock Back

2315 NE Alberta St., 284-4090, theknockback.com. 4 pm-12:30 am Sunday-Thursday, 4 pm-2:30 am Friday-Saturday.

The Knock Back began as a bit of a muddled experience, with a fire pit, occasional music and a downright weird drinks menu. But now it's added the muddling for real. Begun under bartender Jesse Card—who's soon running off to the bar formerly known as Eastbank—the Knock Back's liquor program now boasts Spanish coffees and whiskey cocktails mixed with quince, pumpkin or Madeira, forging the Knock Back's surprising transition to excellent cocktail bar. But don't neglect the selection of boilermakers pairing up the now excellent beer and cider list with assorted whiskeys, nor the Old Fashioned of the day, nor the photo booth that they idiosyncratically have laced out on their patio, which means if you're the sort of person who needs a photo at 5 am, you can totally do that. And that log-seated fire pit is the best patio feature on Alberta.

Happy hour: 4-6 pm daily. Killer food specials, plus $1 off drafts, wells, boilermakers and various bottles of things.

Entertainment: Photo booth. Fire!
