Live Review: Lost Lander at Mississippi Studios, 2/27

Lost Lander at Mississippi Studios on Feb. 27.

Much to the joy of the sold-out crowd, Lost Lander played primarily from its brand new release, Medallion, at its hometown record release show at Mississippi Studios on Feb. 27. It's a glistening pop record that marks a departure from the more nuanced dream-rock of its debut, DRRT. Bigger stages are almost certainly in Lost Lander’s future, given its anthemic new sound, and as Friday’s show proved, the band is already familiar with arena trickery, from impromptu wedding proposals to special guests (Dana Jannsen of Dana Buoy sat in on percussion) to windmilling power chords. Tidiness and professional efficiency trumped human error and daydreaming. But while neatly tailored new tracks like “Gemini” and “Never Go Easy” had fists pumping, it was the wide-eyed older material like “Cold Feet” and “Kangaroo” that struck deeper emotional chords and felt more natural.
