The Grass Shack

6802 NE Broadway, 719-6192, thegrassshackpdx.com. Cash only.

In a business strip housing a Vietnamese jeweler, Binh Minh Banh Mi and a pub called "Your Friendly Bar" that has bars on every window, the Grass Shack's Hawaii exists mostly in the mind—and the memories of the three sisters who own it. The island touches in the sparse, lime-green store are limited to a few pictures on the wall and a sign wishing "Aloha" to the world at large. Flower was limited in early September, although in keeping with its Ohana philosophy the shop has multiple exclusive strains grown by friends—a favored one at the moment is a strong, indica-dominant Mango from Red Dog Organics, alongside a likewise indica-heavy Dutch Treat grown by friend David Wilbourn down in Salem. Edibles are for the sweet-toothed—a mess of peanut butter cups, lemon cookies and hazelnut treats.

Matthew Korfhage has lived in St. Louis, Chicago, Munich and Bordeaux, but comes from Portland, where he makes guides to the city and writes about food, booze and books. He likes the Oxford comma but can't use it in the newspaper.

Willamette Week’s reporting has concrete impacts that change laws, force action from civic leaders, and drive compromised politicians from public office.
