A lifelong bibliophile through his peripatetic career as artist, Critical Mass advocate, and '90s alt-icon in the grunge band Hazel, Fred Nemo started this bookstore with 5,000 titles from his vast personal trove. While Black Hat houses an extensive permanent collection of African American literature and history, the shop's well-curated shelves carry a wide assortment of worthy books—including a volume of his mother Carolyn Kizer's Pulitzer-winning poetry.
