Many a Mount Hood snowboarder, skier, hiker or climber has come down from the slopes feeling depleted, only to see the red-and-yellow Cobra Dogs hot dog truck shining like a beacon in the Government Camp night.
And soon, Portlanders driving down Northeast Sandy Boulevard can feel the same way.
Cobra Dogs, a 21-year-old hot dog brand founded and owned by snowboarders, is opening its first brick-and-mortar location in November at 1642 NE Sandy Blvd. It will be a shared space with One Moto Cafe, previously known as See See Motorcycle coffee shop. The building is also home to Rip’s Co. Skateshop, meaning that the block is suddenly an action sports destination in town.
Former pro snowboarder Derrek Lever has owned Cobra Dogs for about five years.
“I’ve been wanting to do this forever but I wanted it to feel perfect. When I saw this coming up I was like, yep, this is it,” Lever says. “This is just a really cool, active corner.”
Cobra Dogs was founded by snowboarder Cory Grove in 2005 as a way to pay for summer lift tickets on Mount Hood, according to Snowboard magazine. (The magazine has chronicled the entire trajectory of the Cobra Dogs brand, including in a 2021 article titled “Cobra Dogs Returns! Snowboarding’s Favorite Hot Dog Is Back” published when Lever relaunched the truck.) Cobra Dogs still operates its food truck in Welches between June and August, plus catering events.
Offerings include the O.G. ($9) with traditional fixings plus Cobra Sauce; chili dogs ($13); “mack dawgs” ($13) with mac ‘n’ cheese topping; and a “bun me” ($12)—a hot dog spin on a bánh mì sandwich.
Cobra Dogs on Sandy plans to soft launch Nov. 1. One Moto will run its coffee shop from 7 am to 3 pm and then Lever and company will sling hot dogs from noon to 9 pm on weekdays, 10 pm or later on the weekends.
EAT: Cobra Dogs, 1642 NE Sandy Blvd., cobra-dogs.com. Noon–9 pm Monday–Friday, noon–10 pm Saturday and Sunday starting Nov. 1.
