When Roger Tofte finished building Enchanted Forest in 1971, he probably never imagined that nearly 40 years later his family amusement park would host a music festival featuring a band that likes to get naked and a Salem outfit called "Lust Wagon." But this Friday, the theme park—which has always been more scary than whimsical, at least in my book—is the site of the Great Idea, a festival featuring Wampire, Typhoon, Skeletron and a host of other bands from Portland and Salem playing in and around attractions like the Seven Dwarfs' Mine and Snow White's Trail. If you've ever needed an excuse to ditch work and ride the Ice Mountain Bobsleds, take note: For one day only, Salem's own creepy Disneyland really is the happiest place in Oregon.

GO: The Great Idea music festival runs noon-8 pm on Friday, Aug. 6, at Enchanted Forest, 8462 Enchanted Way SE in Turner. Tickets are $15 in advance and $17 day of the show. Ride tickets available separately. All ages welcome.
