Cheap Eats 2010

Bun Bo Hue denotes not only the restaurant but its specialty: Vietnamese vermicelli noodle soup ($6.50-$8.25, with different meat sides). The place itself is a tiny room of blinding white tile, folding-chaired tables, East Asian domestic kitsch and owners whose English is nothing if not apologetic. Which is to say, it's wonderful. Eat anything that says "pork" or "egg cake," and don't miss the ambitious beverage menu, which includes an avocado smoothie ($3) and a hyper-sweet gelatin with kidney-bean base, Che 3 Mau ($3).

Matthew Korfhage has lived in St. Louis, Chicago, Munich and Bordeaux, but comes from Portland, where he makes guides to the city and writes about food, booze and books. He likes the Oxford comma but can't use it in the newspaper.

Willamette Week’s reporting has concrete impacts that change laws, force action from civic leaders, and drive compromised politicians from public office.
