This pre-spring schizo weather is more than a little annoying at times. It's not much fun to dress up, hats might as well be crazy-glued to our heads and our skin takes a beating due to the elements.
Luckily, we have a local source of natural skin remedies chomping at the bit. Talulah Skincare is a Portland-based beauty line of 42 products and counting, all hand-made (including infusion, agitation, cooking, whipping, cooling and curing) from organic botanicals and pure-plant extracts.
According to founder and owner Nicole Maust the company was recently presented with an offer that most would not refuse: "the opportunity to put Talulah on the shelves of a huge, national grocery chain and outsource the product production to increase back stock fivefold."
When pressed to know which "huge national grocery," Maust declined to comment, citing "unfortunately, I am bound by a confidentiality agreement so I can't yet disclose the company name yet, but I can say as much as they do have a clear Portland presence."
Despite a surefire path to making major bank as well as extreme exposure for the company, Maust reasoned that it would also "entail rough competition for the small boutiques, spas and wellness centers that carry and support Talulah across the country and would leave me with much less one-on-one time with my customers, something I've grown to love. If Talulah were available in nearly every major US city alongside milk and cereal, I would certainly make a fortune. But the small businesses that have supported me for years and feed the energy and flavor of so many neighborhoods would be hard hit. " AAHH, now isn't that sweet?
So, yeah, she turned the offer down. Feel the love, Portlanders. That's some serious selfless shit right there. So for all of you product junkies who can't wait to add to your already crammed bathroom basket of goods, here are some particularly pertinent products for under-the-weather skin:
Talulah's new Rosehip Cream Cleanser is a light, deeply conditioning rinse, rich in organic sunflower and avocado oils. It aids in smoothing patchy dryness, calms inflammation and nourishes damaged, sensitive skin. Organic extracts of Echinacea and dandelion cleanse and detoxify. (I know, I know, all of these pretty sounding words just make you want to go out and buy it. That's how they getcha, girls. You throw "dandelion" in there, and it's like, "do you take debit?")
Another set of calming potions come in the form of Talulah's Seasonal Elixirs; super-hydrating, highly aromatic infusions used while bathing or to smooth into seriously dry skin. Pop the cap on these two: The Moira Winter Elixir blends pink peppercorn, lavender and spruce, warming cold extremities during the cold season and the Charlotte Spring Elixir mixes ylang ylang, cedarwood and black peppercorn for a soothing warmth during the damp chill of the rainy season.
