Ryan Frank Leaves The Oregonian

The Oregonian lost one of its best reporters today with the announcement that Ryan Frank, an 11-year veteran of the daily, is leaving to move to Eugene to become the publisher of the Oregon Daily Emerald, the independent daily of the University of Oregon.

It's a bit of a homecoming for Frank, who served as the paper's top editor when he was a student at the U of O, but it would be foolish not to read into his departure a sense that the daily news biz is not as fun as it once was.  While Frank, who most recently has been covering City Hall,  has survived the layoffs at the paper, he has been toiling in a newsroom that is understaffed, plagued with bad morale and unsure about its future.

Frank would have none of that, of course, saying that this was simply too good an opportunity to pass up.
