Last June, WW reported that Con-way, the freight giant with headquarters in Northwest Portland, was promising to turn of one of the last undeveloped swaths of land near downtown into a swank shopping and housing district—on the condition the city approved zoning variances for an artisanal grocer.
Con-way got its way. And Northwest Portland is getting a New Seasons.
The upscale grocery chain announced this morning that it will open a new store—complete with an on-site butcher and an organic bakery—in a 28,000-square-foot warehouse on the Con-way property. (It happens to be across the street from WW's offices.) The grocer plans to open in spring of 2015.
C. E. John Co., which will develop the store, had been negotiating with New Seasons and Whole Foods last year. The grocer will anchor an ambitious development that Con-way says will ultimately include a block-long city park and a northern extension of the Portland Streetcar—along with housing for Con-way's employees.
WW had suggested the site could be called "Con-way Town." But today's announcement shows the company went a different direction. The development is called Slabtown Marketplace.
We're still going to call it Con-way Town.
