Apna Chat Bhavan

1815 NW 169th Place, Suite 6020, Beaverton, 718-7841, apnabazaarpdx.com. Lunch and dinner Monday and Wednesday-Sunday.

Apna Bazaar has long been my favorite Indian grocery in the Portland area. Two years ago, it added a serviceable Indian food counter with goat curries, dosas and a wealth of sauces. The food's a bit up and down—the sambal was the single note-perfect item on the last visit—but two things make the place worth noting, aside from the ease of doing grocery shopping while the food's prepared. You can get a dosa for lunch ($8-$10)—impossible at heavenly Chennai Masala just down the street, which reserves its superior version of the potato-stuffed Southern Indian rice-and-lentil crepe for dinner. And on weekdays, Apna offers an antidote to the lunch buffet: a fresh-made thali platter stacked with an array of veggie and meat items in little metal cups for under $9.
