At The Drive-In IMAGE: Rob "Whitey" McConnaughy
Although you may not know his name, Rob "Whitey" McConnaughy has created some of Portland's most compelling moving images. As both a director of commercials and music videos, he's shot everything from the infamous viral Nike ad in which Kobe Bryant jumps over a moving Aston Martin to videos for the Gossip, Panther and the Thermals. Even though he's been taking pictures of rock bands since the early '90s, McConnaughy has never held a show for his own concert photography. Until now.
"I wanted it to be more of an event than an art show where I'm trying to sell prints for money," McConnaughy says of his gallery debut, set for Thursday, Sept. 3, at East End.

A great number of the shots—featuring the Exploding Hearts, At the Drive-In, Run-DMC, Girls Against Boys and more—McConnaughy took at local haunts, many of which, like Blackbird and 17 Nautical Miles, have since closed. McConnaughy promises some of the prints will be close to 4 feet tall, and that all will kick ass. "Hopefully these photos come across so you feel like you...were there for a moment, as opposed to some weird, surreal subjective thing," he says.
