In this week's print edition, Jonathan Frochtzwajg reviewed the debut EP from Portland indie pop group Genders, who are celebrating the record's release Sunday at Rontoms. Well, there's another artist playing that night who's also enjoying an album release. Kismet is the first full-length effort from Woodwinds a.k.a. Megan Spear, singer-keyboardist for Jared Mees and the Grown Children. The demos available on her MySpace page—which go back as far as 2007—hint at a sound bathed in melancholy whimsy (if that's not too much of a contradiction in terms), and based on this track, the aesthetic has carried over to the proper release. "Babe Blue" is a simple, swaying, vaguely countryish and thoroughly lovely song, showcasing Spear's pure voice and knack for winsome melody—and, toward the end, her wicked glockenspiel skills.
