Blue Star Donuts Opens in Tokyo Friday, April 17

Micah Camden wins the Portland race to sell doughnuts to the Japanese.

Portland luxury doughnut shop Blue Star Donuts is opening in Tokyo this Friday, beating out Voodoo Doughnut in the great Portland race to sell weird doughnuts to Japan (item #5 in link).

As first reported by Willamette Week last December, owners Micah Camden and Katie Poppe are partnering with California upscale mall maker Fred Segal in what they refer to as their "flagship international location." The doughnut stand will be inside a specialty food store called Fred Segal MART.

In an folksy down-home twist for their international luxury brand, the Japanese doughnut shop will be called "Camden's Blue Star Donuts."

The selection will include, according to a press release,  "Blueberry Bourbon Basil, Passionfruit Cocoa Nib, Matcha Green Tea Cake, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Vahlrona Chocolate Crunch and more." Their fried chicken ring (pictured) is conspicuously absent from this list, which saddens both us and the city of Tokyo.

Portland/Eugene/Austin tourist attraction Voodoo Doughnut, who will assuredly bring their own meat-and-maple big guns, has said they will open their first Asian donut shop in June, the first of a planned 19 shops.
