Every Blazers fan is taking the loss of LaMarcus Aldridge differently. Some went the Cleveland route and burned jerseys. Others have dealt with their grief in a much more passive-aggressive manner—by simply donating those jerseys to second-hand stores.
That is, apparently, how Colin Jenkins of local cabana-pop group Rio Grands has coped. But then he went home and did something even more Portland-y: He wrote a song about it.
The straightforwardly titled "I Took My Aldridge Jersey to Goodwill" is a melancholy solo keyboard ballad that cycles through the myriad emotions rippling through Rip City this week, as the All-Star power forward defected to the San Antonio Spurs: sadness ("You're leaving/And I'm grieving/My stomach drops with every update I'm receiving"), betrayal ("Were you the person we thought we knew?"), anger ("You ain't no Clyde/You get no street sign") and regret ("These grey skies/Can't give you your shine"). There's also a good dig at Tim Duncan's JC Penney wardrobe.
In true Portland fashion, though, Jenkins admits he can't stay mad forever, and that, if Aldridge were to pull a Kevin Garnett in four years and finish out his career where it began, he'll keep the light on for him: "Go chase your rings and come on back too stay/We'll keep that left post open for you." I'm sure even the angriest Portland fans can agree there.
